1/88 Grumman SA-16 Albatross

Postby Scott Eslinger » Tue Jul 23, 2019 5:06 am

I've got a, most likely, 50-year-old Nemoto 1/88 scale (by my measurements) model of a Grumman SA-16 Albatross from the Trust Territories Air Service operated by Pan Am around Guam and the Marshall Islands in the Pacific.

The wingspan of this thing is almost 34 cm.

Not sure that I want to sell this as it came from my uncle who flew one of them probably in 65-68. He very well may have actually flown N9944F. From what I have found Pan Am operated the service from 1960-1968 and there were maybe four or less of these planes in the fleet.

I am curious though to see what it might be worth.

I went down a bit of a worm hole tonight after coming across it again tonight and spent an hour or so on the web looking for info on it which led me to your board among other sites.

I actually found a photo of what appears to possibly be the same plane N9944F on a couple sites.

It's in decent shape. Missing one blade on one prop and the pontoon thing on one wing has broke off a bit and there's a few nicks here n there but not bad for being at least 50 years old I think. I probably broke it myself as a kid.

At any rate having looked at your site I thought you guys might get a kick out of seeing it and have some insights for me.

Thanks in advance,
Scott

Here's some photos of it.

Nemoto models of this size typically value in the $300-400 range and I have a specific interest in Nemoto models for collection.

In addition to the damaged prop and pontoon, I can see some warpage in the rear starboard stab. For me personally, models with warped wings are no go items for my collection.

I am not sure if other collectors feel this way, but I would say the warped stab is more of a value detraction than the other two items.

That said, if you want to know the real value, put it up on ebay with a $100 opening price and the market value will be determined in the final value achieved. Maybe I am way out to lunch.
